"How much to start copy trading with?" is one of the most common questions — and the honest answer has two parts. The minimum is whatever your broker accepts, sometimes as little as $10. The sensible amount is higher, for reasons that have to do with lot sizes, stop-outs and normal drawdowns. Here is how to think about it.
The broker's minimum deposit is not the real minimum
A broker's minimum deposit tells you what it will accept, not what a strategy needs. Copy trading scales the master's trades to your balance, and the smallest possible trade is usually 0.01 lot. If your balance is so small that even 0.01 lot is a bigger share of it than the master's trade is of the master's account, your risk is higher than the master's.
A worked example
| Your balance | Master trade (on $10,000) | Proportional size | What the copier can open | Your risk vs the master |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $100 | 0.10 lot | 0.001 lot | 0.01 lot (minimum) | about 10× higher |
| $500 | 0.10 lot | 0.005 lot | 0.01 lot | about 2× higher |
| $1,000 | 0.10 lot | 0.01 lot | 0.01 lot | the same |
| $5,000 | 0.10 lot | 0.05 lot | 0.05 lot | the same |
The numbers are illustrative; the principle holds for every proportional copier.
The stop-out risk on small accounts
Brokers close positions automatically when your margin level falls too low (the stop-out). A small, highly leveraged account can reach it during an ordinary losing streak that a larger account would ride out. Once stopped out, the copy is broken — positions closed at a loss, often at the worst moment.
Why we recommend $1,000
For the CopyTradingSystem package we recommend at least $1,000 in your MT5 account. It is a recommendation, not a requirement — you can start with less. A larger balance gives the trading more room and lowers the risk of being stopped out before the $50 target is reached. If the target is not reached within 7 days (or the account is stopped out), the $25 fee is refunded — but not any trading loss. See the package.
How to choose your own amount
- Start from the most you could lose completely without hardship.
- Check the copier's recommended balance and the master's typical drawdown.
- Make sure the proportional lot is at least the broker's minimum lot.
- Leave room: don't fund the account with every dollar of your risk budget.
The package fee is separate from the trading balance
With CopyTradingSystem there are two pots of money:
- Your broker account — the trading capital, in your name at your broker. We never hold it.
- Your wallet with us — topped up with crypto, any amount, to pay the $25 package and optional services. Refunds and referral commissions arrive here.
So "how much do I need?" is really: enough in the broker account for the strategy, plus $25 in the wallet for each package.
Should you add money during a package?
You can. Our profit calculation removes your own deposits (and adds back withdrawals), so a top-up is never counted as profit. The rules are in how the $50 target is counted.
Margin and leverage, in numbers
Margin is the deposit the broker sets aside for an open trade. On EUR/USD at about 1.08, a 0.10-lot position is worth about $10,800. With 1:100 leverage the margin is about $108; with 1:30 it is about $360. The rest of your equity is the cushion that absorbs losses before a stop-out. A larger balance does not change the size of a loss per pip — it changes how many losing pips the account can take.
Three budgets compared (illustrative)
| Balance | Room for normal swings | Things to consider |
|---|---|---|
| $300 | Small; minimum lots may oversize the risk | Treat as a learning account; expect a higher stop-out risk |
| $1,000 | Reasonable for most proportional strategies | Our recommended starting point for the package |
| $3,000+ | Comfortable; sizes scale smoothly | Only if it is genuinely risk capital |
Adding money later vs starting bigger
Some people start small and add after a few weeks, once they understand how the account behaves. That is sensible — as long as the extra is added because you understand the risk better, not to "win back" a loss. With our package, a deposit made during a package is never counted as profit, so topping up does not bring the $50 target closer; it only gives the trading more room.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start copy trading with $100?
Technically yes, with many brokers. But on most strategies the minimum lot makes your risk much higher than the master's, and a stop-out becomes likely.
What is the minimum deposit for forex brokers?
It ranges from $0–$10 at some brokers to $100–$200 at others. It says nothing about what a copy strategy needs.
Is more money always better?
Only money you can afford to lose. A larger balance lowers the stop-out risk, not the market risk.
